PARTNER WEBINAR

This webinar has been planned and delivered in conjunction with one or more of our valued third-party partners. All such webinars are subject to our quality control procedures to ensure relevant learning objectives are set and met, alongside any product demonstration. A member of the 20:20 Innovation team will be joining the presentation, ensuring a lively and relevant dialogue.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  1. Scope and price a cryptoasset engagement with confidence, using a structured discovery process to uncover the full extent of a client's activity across exchanges, wallets, and DeFi (decentralised finance).
  2. Collect complete and reliable transaction data from exchanges, self-custody wallets, and blockchains, and recognise when a data source is incomplete or unreliable, including handling defunct exchanges.
  3. Review and reconcile crypto transaction data, resolving common issues such as unmatched transfers, missing acquisition costs, and spam tokens, and understand why gaps in one source corrupt the accuracy of the whole calculation.
  4. Produce a defensible UK tax position for a crypto client, applying HMRC's guidance on Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and Income Tax, including Section 104 pooling, and know what evidence to retain in the event of an HMRC enquiry.

KEY TOPICS

    • The UK crypto tax landscape: adoption rates, the tax gap, HMRC compliance activity, nudge letters, and the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF)
    • Scoping and onboarding cryptoasset clients: discovery questionnaires, engagement letters, and pricing crypto work realistically
    • Data collection methods: API connections, CSV exports, and public wallet addresses (xpub/on-chain data), and when each approach fails
    • Handling incomplete records: defunct exchanges, lost wallets, and reconstructing transaction history
    • Transaction review and reconciliation: unmatched transfers, missing cost basis, spam and scam tokens, and balance verification
    • Classifying cryptoasset transactions for UK tax: trading vs investing, staking, mining, airdrops, and DeFi (decentralised finance) including lending and liquidity pools
    • Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for cryptoassets: Section 104 pooling, same-day and 30-day (bed and breakfasting) matching rules
    • The complete CGT picture: combining stocks and shares disposals (from broker statements) with crypto under shared Section 104 pooling and the single annual exempt amount
    • HMRC compliance and enquiry readiness: record keeping requirements, the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF), and nudge letters
    • Systemising the workflow: building a repeatable end-to-end process from client onboarding through to the final tax report

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This session is aimed at accountants, tax advisers, and practice staff who are supporting, or expect to support, clients with cryptoasset activity. It will be particularly valuable for partners and managers deciding whether and how to offer crypto services, and for the team members who handle the work day to day. No prior crypto knowledge is required, though the session focuses on the practical workflow of an engagement rather than an introduction to blockchain theory. It is relevant to practices of all sizes, from firms with dedicated crypto teams to sole practitioners encountering their first crypto client.
