Before an accountant opens any AI tool, they need to understand the professional, ethical, and firm-specific rules that govern its use. AI can provide impressive efficiencies but can also bring risks from overreliance on convincing AI generated answers. This course builds on the foundation of good ethics and data security to provide a road map for AI use.
• Refresher of the fundamental principles of professional ethics for accountants.
• Key points from GDPR and good data security.
• Identify situations where AI use creates a risk to client confidentiality, data protection, or independence.
• Apply the firm's AI usage policy correctly, including what data may and may not be entered into AI tools.
• Recognise the limits of AI output (hallucination, bias, staleness) and apply appropriate professional scepticism before relying on it.
• Know when and how to disclose AI use — to engagement leaders, quality reviewers, and where relevant, clients.
• Escalate uncertainty appropriately rather than guessing or proceeding without approval.
The course will be relevant to new accountants in their first year in practice.
